Brighid’s Mantle is an organization devoted to honoring and celebrating the Four Fires of the Celtic Goddess and Saint, Brighid, and the ancient spiritual traditions of the Gaelic peoples. As such, we have a twofold mission. First, we are honoring and celebrating Brighid the Goddess as She lives and breathes. Not as an archetype, exchangeable with other great goddesses, not as merely an ancient character of mythology, but rather as a living, evolving individual with whom we can have a reciprocal, ever-deepening relationship. The name Brighid’s Mantle is inspired by the cloak that Saint Brighid wore, with which she wrought many miracles.
Secondly, we are honoring and celebrating ancient and extant Gaelic spiritual traditions. These traditions are inseparable from the culture. Thus, we make it a practice to study and integrate the art, language, customs, and life-affirming values of the living Gaelic peoples. Our spiritual focus is on the polytheistic and animistic beliefs and practices, including worship of the deities of the traditional Gaelic pantheon the Tuatha Dé Danann, as well as making alliances with the Fair Folk of the land around us, the goddesses of the land, and our ancestors. However, we do not shun Gaelic Christianity. We simply do not make it a primary worship practice here.
We are also a not-for-profit arts organization, with the intention of being financially self-sustaining in exchange for sharing our gifts, skills, and products.
Our sources are all aspects of living and ancient Gaelic lore, art, language, and customs, and we treasure the contributions from scholarly research. We also take inspiration from direct contact with the gods, the land spirits, and our ancestors through ritual, art, meditation, dreams, and interaction with nature, as is true to ancient Celtic ways of receiving knowledge.
As our mission is first to honor and celebrate Brighid as a living Goddess with whom we are in a mutual, growing relationship, we honor Her Four Fires as expressed by our present-day passions, within the general field over which she has governance. For example, as she is a Goddess of inspiration in the form of poetry, we express this inspiration through music, dance, and drama as well. Her crafts of the hands, expressed as smithing, extend for us into creations with fabric, jewelry, and the green world. Her healing fire we express through healing touch and food preparations, as well as herbalism and birthing arts. And we use her heart fire to reflect within and grow ourselves, that we may generate the clarity, compassion, and energy to do the necessary outward work of transforming our planet.
Each of these branches offers related classes, events, and services. There are also offerings that span across multiple branches. In addition, we have products for sale and a variety of writings.
Our vision is a world in which the life-affirming cultural and spiritual traditions of our ancestors who walked in wisdom are alive and flourishing. In this vision, these cultures are numerous and diverse, bringing us joy, vitality, sustainability, reverence, meaning, an honoring of nature, and a sense connection to one another and to the non-human realms, as co-inhabitants of our precious home, Earth. In this vision, we celebrate one another’s differences rather than shunning them, even if this can be scary at times. We do this because we believe that ALL of our wisdom, all of our talent, all of our passion, all of our dreams are crucial here ~ to survive, to thrive, to experience wholeness.
Brighid’s Mantle welcomes folks of all genders, races, ethnicities, nationalities, faiths, romantic orientations, physical and mental abilities, ages, classes, and income levels. And we welcome all who share this value of hospitality.
